Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
